Club Competitions

Our competition season generally starts in March and runs through until the end of October.  During the year we hold regular club competitions where you will have the chance to test your skills against yourself and your fellow club members.  Each qualifying competition gives you the chance to improve your 'handicap', win a trophy and of course claim bragging rights.

Don't worry if you are new to all this, we know that there is lots of golfing jargon to decode and seemingly complex scoring systems.  Your fellow golfers will always hep out but if you need a handy reminder check out our Jargon Buster below.

If you're ever unsure check with a committee member

Formats
(We're still working on this bit, if you can't find what you need, please ask a committee member)

Stableford

Stableford is a scoring system in golf that awards points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole, rather than just counting total strokes. In this format, players earn points for each hole based on their performance compared to a fixed score, usually par. For example, if score a net par, you get 2 points if you score a net birdie, you earn 3 points, and if you score a net bogey, you will earn 1 point.

This method encourages players to play their best without the pressure of traditional stroke-play scoring.

Strokeplay (Medal)

Stroke play in golf is a format where each player competes to complete the course in the fewest number of total shots. Every stroke taken, whether it's a good or bad shot, is counted, and the player with the lowest score at the end wins. It's a straightforward and popular to play, emphasizing consistency and skill over individual holes.

Greensomes

A team format. You play in a pair and although you will both tee off on each hole you get to pick the best tee shot and then play just that ball for the rest of the hole, playing alternate shots until you finish the hole. Your handicap (worked out by the system) will combine the handicaps for both players.

Par Bogey

Par Bogey is a match play style competition, but you play against the course, not against another golfer.
Instead of adding up total shots/strokes, you compare your score on each hole to the hole’s par.

How scoring works
For every hole:
•    Net score BETTER than par → Win the hole (+1)
•    Net score is Par → Halve the hole (0)
•    Net score is WORSE than par → Lose the hole (−1)
You keep a running total across the round.
________________________________________
Simple example
On a par 4 hole:
•    You score net 3 → birdie → +1
•    You score net 4 → par → 0
•    You score net 5 or more → bogey or worse → −1
Repeat this for all 18 holes.

Final result
At the end of the round:
•    A positive total = you beat the course
•    Zero = you tied with the course
•    A negative total = the course beat you
For example:
•    7 holes won, 5 lost, 6 halved
→ +2 overall
